Has anyone ever attempted to do so?  What were the results?  If not, has anyone ever thought about doing this?

This depends a lot on what you mean by "commune".

The commune talked about in The Coming Insurrection is different from the commune talked about by the Rainbow Gathering.

I assume you're talking about "intentional communities", as Lawrence responded, but still.

While not all intentional community experiments are anarchist, many do have a similar ethos in terms of participatory decision making and other horizontal organizational forms.
